Pam Donovan - Last Day as Mayor

video

August Elect Commissioners now begin office.

SWEARING-IN OF NEWLY ELECTED (AUGUST, 2008 ELECTION)
COMMISSIONERS FOR FOUR-YEAR TERM

The City Commission choose to have the election 7 months early and combined it with a Democrat primary. They said this was done to have saved the city over $100,000. But Republican's are normally not allowed to attend Democrat primaries. All the Commissioners are Democrats . Because of this voting date Democrats were more likely to turn out to vote. I know of at least one incident of a Margate citizen who was turned away from voting because he is a Republican. I don't believe this was a widespread event, but apparently even poll workers were confused about city elections durning a primary. They could have held the elections closer to the the normal Municipal election date by joining it with the General Elections which both parties heavly attend. You will hear on these videos Joe Varsallone often speak negatively about how poorly attended the Margate election was. This could of been avoided if this non-partistian election date wasn't so party decided.
